Where are they Now: Mary Westness

1) What years were you involved with Youth2Youth?

2000-2003

2) What have you been doing with your life since graduating from Youth2Youth?

I attended Whitewater to obtain my teaching certificate, got married, bought a house in Janesville, and I’ve been teaching 4 year old kindergarten for six years.

3) What are you most proud of?

My daughter, Ada, who is a year old.

4) How have skills you learned in Youth2Youth helped you in your life beyond Youth2Youth?

Youth 2 Youth gave me my first experiences being in front of a large group of people, which built confidence. It gave me experience with children that helped in my teaching career. I also needed 300 hours of working with children in order to get into the College of Education at Whitewater, and my experience with Y2Y counted. Most importantly, I think Y2Y taught me to always stand up and work hard for what I believe in, no matter what!

5) What advice would you give to today’s Youth2Youth members?

The work you are doing makes a big difference in the lives of your peers! I thank you for continuing the fight. It may not always be easy to stand up in front of your peers. Trust your instincts and know that you are doing the right thing, and stand your ground.
